JAYME BARR-NOBLES: NEW COLLAGES
October 10 through November 1, 2008
Please join Internationally known Birmingham collage artist Jayme Barr-Nobles for her opening night reception on Friday evening, October 10th from 5:00 until 9:00.
Hawthorn Gallery is proud to welcome back Birmingham collage artist Jayme Barr-Nobles for her second solo exhibition of new work.
Following the great success of her 2006 Hawthorn Gallery show, when art lovers from across the country added Jayme's collages to their collections, she made a strong showing and was wonderfully received at Art Miami in 2007.
As Jayme's collages increase in size, she is seeing a shift in imagery from the remembered past to a more distant time. The iconography that fuels her work has roots that reach from the Far East to the Ranaissance, from Ancient Mesopotamia to the imagined images of the night sky.
Explore Jayme's dynamic new collages and see installation shots of her exhibition in the "Shows" section of our website.
BLACK & WHITE: Birmingham's City Paper, has featured Jayme Barr-Nobles new collage, "Gemini" on the cover of its October 2-15, 2008 issue. Be sure and pick up a copy today. Congratulations Jayme!
A MASTER CLASS IN SEVEN PAGES
Hawthorn Gallery's and Birmingham's own Terry Strickland delivers an illustrated master class in the June issue of The Artist's Magazine.
The extensive profile, "Facing Life Head-On", features many of Terry's paintings. A step-by-step explanation of Terry's working process is accompanied by color photos that show the progress of one painting from pencil drawing on canvas to a completed work of a young man wearing a masquerade mask. Incidentally, "Masquerade" sold at the special artist's studio visit we held for Terry's collectors at her home in January.
The Artist's Magazine, is a must-read monthly for thousands of artists, collectors and gallerists. The publication's content helps artists "master their craft and manage their business," says Editor Maureen Bloomfield.
Strickland joins a historically significant list of important artists -- Juliette Aristides, Daniel Green, Nelson Shanks, Burton Silverman, Robert Liberace and Sharon Sprung are but a few -- who have revealed their studio techniques and stylistic tips.
There is even a photo of Terry's palette and a detailed list of its colors, their brand name, her recipe for varnish mixture, even the brushes that imbue her figurative paintings with luminous skin tones and sensuous fabrics. As Strickland explained to The Artist's Magazine reporter Paula Theotocatos, "I'll spend minutes mixing a color that's only used for one or two strokes. ... I want the paint to become flesh."
Kathie and I could not be more proud of Terry and the continuing rise of her bright star.
Go to the "Shows" section of our website to see the amazing new work Terry has completed for her upcoming November solo exhibition.
THE ARTIST'S JOURNEY: AT 40, TERRY STRICKLAND FOUND NEW DEVOTION TO HER PAINTING
Gallery artist Terry Strickland is featured in a terrific four page article in the September issue of Lipstick Magazine.
Writer Jennifer Walker-Journey details Terry's journey from respected commercial artist to acclaimed fine artist. Featuring seven images of painting from Terry's upcoming Hawthorn Gallery exhibition, the article is a fine local tribute to the internationally known artist.
KIM BERNARD REVIEWED IN ART NEWS
We congratulate gallery artist Kim Bernard on the ARTnews review of her recent solo exhibition at Boston's prestigious Arden Gallery.
"With lyrical swoops and coils, Kim Bernard transforms encaustic panels into lively worlds of abstraction." writes art critic Joanne Silver in the October 2008 issue of ARTnews. "The Maine based painter and sculptor, who is also a dancer, draws on the movement of her whole body to create the fluid marks she burns and slices into waxy surfaces placed flat on the floor of her studio. Eleven of these paintings and three sculptures - in which the molten, pigmented beeswax was combined with lead, copper and plywood - produced an exhibition that appeared both modern and ancient."
Hawthorn Gallery's Year of the Woman Artist 2008
We are celebrating the women artists of Hawthorn Gallery in 2008. To our delight, we are presenting five of our internationally known women artists in solo exhibitions of their latest work. There has never been a glass ceiling at Hawthorn Gallery. On the first day in business more than half of our artists were female and although our stable of artists has continually evolved over the years, the percentage of women we represent has remained steady. The strong, knowing, nurturing, sensual and poetic artistic voices of Marlene Rose, Pamela Murphy, Jenny Chi, Jayme Barr-Nobles and Terry Strickland will undoubtedly resonate in each of their virtuoso exhibitions.
Director's Notes
On January 3rd, 2001, I turned the key in the front door of our former location in Crestline Village, arranged the yellow roses I purchased that morning to celebrate my first day in business, and then sat behind my desk hoping someone would come in and buy something. I was more than a little scared. With a small amount of money and a lot of hard work, I had relocated from Key West and opened Hawthorn Gallery. I believed in my gut that Birmingham was the best place for my gallery concept to succeed. Thanks to all of Hawthorn Gallery's collectors, artists, staff and fans the big dreams I had for the business, on that pivotal day seven years ago, have all come true.
From day one, Hawthorn Gallery's mission has been to sell the hobby of collecting fine art through showing one-of-a-kind paintings, drawings, sculpture and collage by accomplished mid-career American artists and to do so in an environment where art collectors feel at home and are continually able to acquire exciting new contemporary art at a great value.
Our first solo exhibition opened the week following September 11th, 2001. In the chaos of that week, I was sure the gallery was done for. Surprisingly, people came and I soon realized that art serves as comfort food for many individuals, as it has for me. With the stunning success of Michael A. Palmer's first one-man show that fall and the Men Show: The Male Figure in Contemporary Art the following spring, the gallery really took off.
As the gallery grew rapidly, I continued featuring gallery artists in dynamic solo shows and kept it fresh by annually visiting my artists' studios. From Maine to Florida I traveled, learning while building strong and lasting relationships with the artists in their environments. These experiences have allowed me to tell the artists' stories and that has made all the difference.
In 2005, with the addition of amazingly talented Kathie Lawson to the staff, Hawthorn Gallery was able to jump to the next level. We soon went online with our up-to-the-minute website and began our effective advertising campaign with ARTnews. Teaming with longtime gallery patrons Jim and Tara Bryant, we settled on a larger space and in August, 2006, we celebrated the opening of our newly renovated 3,500-square-foot gallery in downtown Birmingham. At the 17th annual edition of Art Miami, we flourished among top galleries from around the globe. Birmingham artists Jayme Barr-Nobles, Kathleen Lawson and Terry Strickland joined gallery favorites Michael A. Palmer, Kim Bernard, Lindley Briggs and William Thomson to shine brightly at the international modern and contemporary art fair in Miami Beach.
Looking back, the last seven years have truly been a tremendous ride. Just wait and see where we go from here.
