Greece, or more properly, the Hellenic Republic is considered by many to be the cradle of Western civilisation. One fifth of the country is made up of islands in the Aegean, Adriatic and Ionian seas and it has borders with Bulgaria, Albania, the Macedonian Republic and Turkey to the north and west.

The area has been inhabited for over 5,000 years but since the time of Christ had been under the control of the Roman, Byzantium and Ottoman empires until achieving independence in 1829.If there is one food item that many people naturally associate with Greece it has to be the olive. The climate and countryside are ideal and olive oil has always played a central part in Greek cuisine which actually stretches back about 4000 years.

The world’s first known cookbook was written by a Greek, Archestratos, in 330 BC.Most Greek meals will start, like many other Mediterranean countries, with a mezze. Traditionally this could contain olives, bread, feta, dolmades (stuffed grape leaves containing pine nuts, currants and rice), sardines, grilled octopus or squid and marinated mackerel.

No where in Greece is more than 85 miles from the sea and hence fish is a major protein source. Bouillabaisse is the very popular Greek boiled fish but it may also be served fried or grilled. Lamb is also popular and often served in stews but can be roasted. Moussaka is one of the best known Greek dishes consisting of spicy minced lamb with potatoes, aubergines and béchamel sauce in layers.

While most Greek food is very spicy (in fact they probably use more spices than any other Mediterranean country) the spices are not hot, for example a Turkish kebab is generally much hotter than one from Greece.

There are many types of cheese available in Greece but the best known has to be Feta. Made with sheep’s milk or a combination of goat’s and sheep’s it is pure white and often preserved in olive oil. Feta is often served as part of a Greek salad. The Greek fast food is Souvlaki, sometimes referred to as the Greek burger but made with lamb or chicken served in pita bread with a salad and a cucumber and yoghurt dip.

Wine has also been central to Greek culture for a long time and has also heavily influenced that in other Mediterranean countries, as might be expected from a country that has been drinking it for thousands of years. In fact there is evidence that wine was being produced 6500 years ago. Retsina is perhaps the best known but there are many others with a resurgence in quality in recent years. The classical Greek alcoholic drink is, of course, ouzo, a strong spirit made from grape skins, berries and herbs often served as an aperitif perhaps with plates of mezze.

Wooden flooring

Wooden floors are all the rage now but it is not only the fashionable look which inspires people to choose wooden floors they have health benefits too. Carpets however hard and frequently you cleaned them would always hold dirt in them. Have you ever tried to clean your carpet using an industrial cleaner the dirt removed after only one month would shock you? So if you have young babies crawling across the floor you should consider wooden floors as a better option if not a cleaner option.

Some people will argue that a wooden floor is just like a solid floor and is cold under foot and hard if something is dropped onto it. This is not true a wooden floor can be warm under foot especially if you have installed underflow heating but even if you have not you will find that wood is much warmer than ceramic tiles or marble and should you drop something it will not shatter as is the case with both ceramic and marble.

Wooden floors are easy to keep clean they are all types of polishers and cleaning products designed to keeps your wooden floor looking the best it can. You should expect your wooden floor to last you upwards of ten years carpets if continually cleaned on a monthly basis are unlikely to look good after a few years at best.

The advantage to wooden floors is that you can always re-sand them if need be you can do this yourself buy hiring floor sanders or get a professional floor sander to do the job for you. If done correctly you would expect to sand a wooden floor maybe every 15 years or so depending on the amount of traffic the floor receives.

When you are considering a wooden floor check out the prices of flooring supplies compared with carpets and laminates you will find that in the long run you will be saving money by opting for a quality wood floor.

Holidays to Menorca

Being one of the islands off the coast of Spain Menorca has always been a popular holiday destination with the British due to it’s close proximity to the UK.

Menorca is the quieter island of the Balearic Islands and an idea destination for a family holiday.  The island is a lot quieter and family orientated and less built up compared to the other islands in the area meaning that a cheap family holiday is often easy to find.

Flights to the island are generally well priced and it is often better to book a holiday without going down the package holiday route where many bargains can be found.

Many of the popular cheap Menorca hotels and apartment complexes are available to book on their own and a flight can be arranged with one of the low cost providers and as the island is quite small it is easy enough to arrange a taxi to your resort with the most expensive journey to the resorts furthest away from the airport costing around 50 euro each way.

If on the other hand you wish to hire a car for the holiday they can be hired from as little as 25 euro per day depending on your requirements.

That’s not to say that a package holiday to Menorca should be dismissed.  With the current economical climate the travel industry is seeing a decline in the number of UK travellers leaving for abroad and instead opting for a holiday in the UK.  With this in mind many are cutting back their prices as far as possible to attract the budget holiday maker.

Three plants you should consider for your own garden.

First the Japanese dogwood – this loves full sun to partial shade making it pretty flexible in terms of where you put it. It prefers a neutral to acid soil and a rich soil. It is slow growing which means it shouldn’t need lots of cutting back at any point.
It flowers in June and the flowers are white. Once the flowers have gone you’ll be left with red fruits – they’re not edible but pretty and their colour will brighten your garden. It is fully hardy. With wavy-margined, dark green leaves turning crimson-purple in autumn this tree gives colour for much of the year.
As long as you incorporate a quantity of composted pine needles or well-rotted leaf mould when planting it will do fine. Requires minimal pruning and has a natural conical shape.

B lack bamboo loves a humus rich soil in the sun, it will tolerate some shade. it is fast growing and fully hardy, It has lovely polished, damson-black mature canes and dark green leaves which grow on thin arching canes, which are dark green for the first two or three years, look perfect in a contemporary, minimalist garden particularly if the low-growing foliage is stripped. Not ultra-vigorous and invasive bamboos, it is advisable to restrict the roots using a rigid, non-perishable barrier to prevent the plant from spreading.
Will need water regularly until established. Bamboos do not like competition, so are best planted en masse in a specific area dedicated to bamboos.

Clematis love the sun and rich fertile soil. Has average growth and a longer flowering period from May to August. The flowers are white and the plant has
attractive dark purple stamens
It is fully hardy and a great climber.Care is basic just remove dead and damaged stems before growth starts in early spring, cutting all remaining stems back to where strong buds are visible. You can apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the base of the plant in early spring as well.

potato-planter – it’s not long off time to dig up the first early new potatoes we put in a couple of months ago. You don’t need a big garden to grow spuds either with this useful patio planter. It holds about 40 litres of compost and is suitable for between 3 to 5 seed potatoes. It come with detailed growing instructions. They come in packs of three, so by planting at 4 to 6 week intervals you can spread your harvest over an extended period – ensuring you don’t get a glut of howe grow potatoes all at once. Plus, there’s no need to do any digging as you can just remove a few at a time or tip the planter out and enjoy the real taste of home-grown spuds – from plant to plate in minutes!

Raspberries – A delicious red delight

Raspberries – a delicious red berry fruit that you can eat on it’s own or turn into jam, flans, pies or even crumble!

It’s a versatile fruit and it’s possible to be eating this from late June all the way through to mid October

Glen Moy is supposed to be the best early fruiting raspberry available.

They are a long term plant though so preparation is key. Prepare an area by weeding it and dig in lots of well rotted manure of garden compost to make sure the soil will be full of nutrients for the plants to grow well in.

Raspberries need support so you must ensure they have a framework to grow onto. By putting in two poles or stakes and running two wires along you can provide enough support. Raspberries may stay in the same place for many years – perhaps upwards of 12, so it’s important to get it right. They are incredibly invasive too and will send underground runners into neighbouring beds.

Plant the raspberry cane plants and water them in. Keep the site clear of weeds and perhaps use weed suppresent material inbewteen the beds. This also means you get your feet less diirty in summer when it’s time to pick them.

Prune summer fruiting varieties in autumn, and cut down those canes which fruited this year right to the ground. Tie in up to 8 of the strongest stems that have grown this year. In midwinter you should prune these to 15cm above your top wire.

Some autumn fruiting varieties may not need staking and can be left to grow more as a bush than a trained plant.

You should dig out spare runners that appear. You can grow these on elsewhere though.

Like all soft fruit they need plenty of moisture when they are fruiting. You may need to water them about every ten days in dry spells. Remember that a good watering is better than just a small amount. Plenty of organic matter in the soil helps the plants to retain water.
